A report recommends keeping an electronic health record system at Vancouver Island hospitals. Island Health C-E-O Dr. Brendan Carr says the review found that the organization needs to do a better job of consulting with staff in moving forward with the program. “You anticipate that there is going to be an impact in their productivity, and learning from other sites that have done this kind of work suggest to us that those changes in productivity can largely be overcome over a period of months by refining the tools and refining the way that the tools are incorporated into work flows,” Carr states. He believes the I-Health program is the way of the future. “As healthcare becomes more and more complex, as information is growing exponentially, we are beyond the capacity of the human brain to hold all of this information.” Island Health plans to introduce the I-Health program at all 150 facilities.
