Comox Strathcona Waste Management is telling people not to be alarmed by the flames they’ve seen coming from the landfill’s flaring station. Senior Manager James Mathers says the flares are part of normal operations meant to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “Local residents will see a single flame and that might potentially alarm people thinking there is a fire in that direction,” states Mathers. “If it’s a large flame with no plume, smoke, or orders, that is a good indication it is coming from our flare station.” Mathers says the flares also help reduce the odour in the area.
