A senator in Washington is calling for B-C to follow the state’s lead on ocean-based Atlantic salmon farms. Senator Kevin Ranker says a ban on net-pen farms will be less effective in the shared ecosystem of the Salish Sea if fish farms continue to operate in Canadian waters. The Washington state senate and house of representatives have recently passed bills that would phase out net-pen farms when their leases come up for renewal over the next seven years. Jeremy Dunn with the B-C Salmon Farmers Association says the regulatory regime in Canada is different than south of the border and the senator may not be aware of local rules.
