The B-C Wine Institute has announced it intends to challenge the constitutionality of Alberta’s ban on wine imports from British Columbia. It says it regrets having to resort to legal action but the ban imposed on February 6th is severely harming B-C wineries and grapegrowers, many of which are small, family-owned operations. The institute says it believes it’s unconstitutional to prohibit the import of Canadian goods from another province based solely on where they come from. The B-C government also plans to challenge the ban under Canada’s free-trade agreement but Alberta won’t budget until B-C reverses its proposal to at least temporarily refuse additional oil shipments from Alberta — potentially jeopardizing the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.
