The head of an association of B-C real estate developers says measures in Tuesday’s budget won’t address affordability across the province. Anne McMullin with the Urban Development Institute says unless the province works with municipalities to speed up approval times, prices will remain high due to a lack of supply. She says an additional property transfer tax on homes worth more than three million dollars will also make it more expensive for developers to acquire land — and that cost will be passed on to buyers. The budget introduced a new tax on property speculators, expanded and increased a tax on foreign homebuyers and earmarked six billion dollars to build affordable housing over the next decade.
