A new report says evidence of microplastics has been found in 16 sites tested in an area that’s home to half of B-C’s shellfish farms. The research from Simon Fraser University says the sites were in the Baynes Sound and Lambert Channel areas, where a norovirus outbreak in raw oysters from Baynes Sound earlier this month made 100 people sick. The report suggests the shellfish industry’s large-scale reliance on plastic materials is contributing to the pollution and its authors are calling for further research to assess the extent to which shellfish are ingesting microplastics. Co-author Leah Bendell says oysters and clams serve as the ocean’s filters and they are sending a message of zero tolerance on plastics.
