New figures from the B-C Coroners Service show suspected overdose deaths fell by 23 per cent in April compared to March, which had a near-record number. The figures show 124 people died in April — which amounts to about four deaths a day in the province — down from 161 the previous month. The majority of the fatal overdoses involved the painkiller fentanyl, which is often laced into street drugs such as heroin. Most deaths occurred in the Fraser Health region, which saw a slight increase in fatal overdoses while all other health regions saw a decrease.
