Wildfire officials in B-C are bracing for an increase in activity as a heat wave envelops the province. Chief Information Officer Kevin Skrepnek says the heat expected over the next few days will dry out fuels, so fires will start more quickly and burn more aggressively. Several new fires started have already started since the hot spell began, mostly in the northern part of the province. Skrepnek says his immediate concern is people starting fires, and more than 200 wildfires have been sparked by humans so far this year.
