B-C’s fish farm operators are being given four years to prove their open-net pens don’t harm wild salmon stocks. The farms will also have that time to get approval from any First Nation whose territory they occupy. The province announced the new policies as tenures expired for 20 fish farms operating around the Broughton Archipelago off Vancouver Island. Agriculture Minister Lana Popham says tenures for the farms will continue on a month-to-month basis but they must reach agreements with First Nations by June of 2022.
