One of B-C’s top addiction experts says more needs to be done to fight the ravages of illegal drug use after 130 overdoses were reported in one day last week. The staggering figure comes from B-C Emergency Health Services, which says paramedics responded that many calls on Friday — a statistic only seen once before in April of last year. Doctor Evan Wood of the B-C Centre on Substance Use says the unofficial number of overdose cases was likely even higher than 130, since it only represents ambulance calls and not cases where another drug user or service worker provided the life-saving medication naloxone. He says the wider health-care system itself must turn towards addiction treatment after decades of unfocused attention.
