Hornby Island’s only public school has been badly damaged by a fire — just days before the new school year begins. Firefighters called to Hornby Island Community School early Sunday found nearly a third of the building’s interior engulfed in flames. Hornby Island fire chief Doug Chinnery says the school’s fire doors successfully isolated the rest of the building. No one was hurt, but it remains unclear how students will be affected.
