Transportation Minister Claire Trevena says she’s rolling back speed limits on 15 sections of highways to reduce accidents, save lives and keep roads open. Trevena says the change is taking place immediately after a three-year review found an “alarming” increase in serious crashes on the highway sections, including Highway 19 between Parksville and Campbell River where speed-related accidents jumped by one-third. She says speed limits are being rolled back by 10 kilometres per hour in the 15 sections totalling 570 kilometres. Speeds on sections of 16 other routes, including the Coquihalla, won’t be changed because the province says accident rates there have not increased since speed limits were increased in 2014.
