The Canadian Red Cross is working on raising money to purchase a mobile command centre for Vancouver Island. Agency’s Derrick Harvey says this would help the Red Cross be more pro-active in assisting with disasters. “In situations like earthquakes, where they come suddenly and we have no idea what to predict, we will if the infrastructure is still in place have the ability to move the supplies to where we need it,” Harvey states. He says the trailer would help the Red Cross in responding to disasters like last year’s forest fire near Port Hardy. “Had we had one of these on the Island at the time, we would have been able to pre-position it closer to Port Hardy or in Port Hardy in the eventuality that people had to be evacuated.” Harvey says the command centre trailer would carry a range of supplies, everything from cots to blankets.
