B-C’s New Democrat leader says he’ll keep pushing to get big money out of politics, despite the Liberal government’s refusal to support his bill banning corporate and union donations to political parties. John Horgan asked Premier Christy Clark to support a bill he plans to introduce in the legislature next month, but the Liberals say they’ll reject it. Horgan has been critical of Clark’s fundraising, saying that just 1.5 per cent of those who donated to the Liberals accounted for half of the 12.3 million dollars raised by the party last year. Advanced Education Minister Andrew Wilkinson says political parties need to raise money to operate, and adds that the Liberals are in favour of transparency in the public funding of elections.
