The World Wildlife Fund is slamming a federal recovery plan for an endangered population of killer whales in the southern Georgia Strait. It says a proposal for more research will take too long and the federal government should impose immediate regulations to protect the whales. The federal plan calls for intensive research on food supply, critical habitat and the effect of human activity such as noise from ships. Federal officials acknowledge the highly vulnerable orcas have likely already been harmed by shipping and contaminants in the busy waterway — and say that would increase if the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion boosts oil tanker traffic leaving from Vancouver.
