B-C’s softwood trade envoy says there’s a slight opportunity to quickly negotiate a new lumber agreement between Canada and the United States, which expired in October 2015. David Emerson says he thinks there’s a window of opportunity in late summer or early fall for an agreement to be reached and Canadian officials in Washington and Ottawa are preparing for negotiations. But he says after visiting Washington last week, he also saw continued turbulence in the administration of President Donald Trump and strong protectionist sentiments in the U-S Congress. He says if a new deal isn’t reached by the fall, it will likely be a lengthy fight, which he hopes doesn’t get wrapped into the President’s proposal for renegotiations of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
