The bodies of five hikers who went missing on Mount Harvey near Lions Bay were recovered by rescuers Sunday. Martin Colwell from Lions Bay Search and Rescue says the hikers fell about 500 meters when a slab of snow they were standing on gave way Saturday afternoon. A sixth hiker who had fallen behind from the group realized they disappeared and alerted officials. Colwell says about 70 volunteers and other first responders searched through rough conditions to locate the deceased hikers within a 24-hour period, allowing the families to have closure.
