The Green party has released its plan to address income inequality in the province on Day Two of the B-C election campaign. Green Leader Andrew Weaver says much of the wealth increases in the province over the past few years have gone to the rich, while child poverty and the use of food banks have increased. He says B-C residents are also at risk of losing their jobs as the world faces massive shifts including automation, technological innovation and the rise of the gig economy of temporary jobs. Key planks in the plan include increasing income assistance and shelter allowances for people with disabilities, designing a pilot program to test a basic guaranteed income program and establishing a committee to set a new minimum wage.
