The Heiltsuk Nation is applauding the federal government for proposing a moratorium on oil tankers along B-C’s north coast. The legislation was introduced in the House of Commons Friday, fulfilling an election pledge made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Heiltsuk chief councillor Marilyn Slett says the law would bolster efforts to protect lands and waters within their territory. The Heiltsuk (HELTS’-uk) Nation saw first hand what the effects of a spill could be last fall when the Nathan E. Stewart tug ran aground, spilling thousands of litres of diesel along the coast.
