The normally undramatic task of appointing a house Speaker is shaping up to be a political conundrum in British Columbia, where experts say voters could return to the polls. A New Democrat minority government counting on support from the Green party has a single-seat lead over the Liberals coming out of last month’s election. Giving up a member to be Speaker would eliminate that advantage, leaving the house tied. Gary Levy, former editor of the Canadian Parliamentary Review, says if no one comes forward to be elected speaker, Lieutenant-Governor Judith Guichon could dissolve the legislature and call another election.
