The union representing postal workers is calling on Canada Post to “come clean” on statistics around theft from mailboxes, but the Crown corporation is refusing to release the numbers. Mike Palecek, national president of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, says anecdotal reports from postal workers indicate that mail sent to between 15-hundred and four thousand addresses in Richmond is being held. He says that could be for a variety of reasons, including break-ins to apartment buildings or damaged community mailboxes, and postal workers want answers on why. A spokesman for Canada Post says they take mail security very seriously and does not release statistics on mailbox theft or vandalism because of security concerns.
