A group of businesses on Vancouver Island are banding together to remove six derelict boats that pose a risk to the environment and public safety. Brain Thacker owns Pacific Industrial and Marine, and he says people have long talked about the problem, but no one seemed ready to take action on getting rid of the abandoned vessels. He says getting rid of the boats will be expensive because the water is shallow around two of the wrecks, so a helicopter must be hired to airlift them out. The cost — pegged between 40-thousand and 50-thousand dollars — will be shared between Thacker’s company and two others.
