Hundreds of people have been allowed to return to their homes near Kelowna after a nearby wildfire forced them to flee. The Central Okanagan Regional District lifted an evacuation order for 263 properties yesterday morning, allowing about 600 residents to return. About 400 others remain displaced by the fire, which started about 20 kilometres east of Kelowna last Thursday and is estimated by the B-C Wildfire Service to be 465 hectares in size. The wildfire service says flames have come within a few hundred metres of properties, but the agency has not received any reports of burnt structures.
