B-C government has announced plans to protect more forested areas for two birds — the northern goshawk and the marbled murrelet. Forests Minister Doug Donaldson says the unique species with declining numbers need mature and old-growth forest areas for breeding. He says habitat-protection plans will include species inventory and monitoring for up to 12-hundred northern goshawks and upwards of 125-thousand marbled murrelets. Northern goshawks are large hawks that usually nest in trees along B-C’s coast, and the murrelets are the only coastal seabirds that nest in forested areas, usually in old-growth trees.
