A member of Canadian Doctors for Medicare says he’s pleased to hear the B-C government will be enforcing a law against physicians who bill patients for services outside the public system. Doctor Michael Klein says recent increased funding from the province will allow for more hip and knee replacements through a centrally managed surgical wait list, taking away the incentive for private clinics. Health Minister Adrian Dix says starting in October, patients will be able to file a complaint against a doctor who charges them for services covered by medicare, including surgery or diagnostic tests. Under the law introduced by the Liberals over a decade ago, doctors who refuse to refund patients could be fined thousands of dollars and face criminal charges.
