This week, the Operational Communications Centre received 24 calls which were “911 hang ups”. While some of these calls were meant for police, fire or ambulance, many were accidental. Accidental 9-1-1 calls divert resources from real emergencies. It’s often impossible to verify that these calls were accidental, which means they must be acted upon as if they were true emergencies. To prevent accidental 911 calls, protect your phone by locking and storing it carefully, do not allow children to play with phones, and do not program 911 into your phone. Finally, if you dial by accident, stay on the line and speak with the dispatcher so that we can ensure you’re alright.
