Three First Nations on the central coast have signed a letter of understanding with the province that will see them take part in decisions about the future of fish farms in the Broughton Archipelago. They say they will work with the province to come up with actions and recommendations over the next 90 days. Chief Bob Chamberlin says his community did not consent to the presence of fish farms on their territory and he looks forward to a process that respects the need for consent going forward. Last week, the province announced that salmon farmers will have four years to show their open-net operations don’t harm wild salmon and to get approval from area First Nations to locate the operations in their territories.
