Fires of concern are now burning in all six of B-C’s regional fire centres with high temperatures replacing lightning strikes as the big concern for firefighters. The Regional District of Nanaimo was the latest to declare a state of local emergency last night due to an out of control fire in the Nanaimo Lakes area. Homes have been evacuated on the west flank of the 1.5-square kilometre fire that broke out Sunday and evacuation alerts have been issued for 77 properties on the east side. More than 460 wildfires are currently burning and B-C Wildfire Service spokeswoman Kyla Fraser says although the weather is not giving weary firefighters a break, crews from outside the province and even outside the country are arriving to help out.
