B-C’s chief fire information officer, Kevin Skrepnek, says wildfires have charred nearly 95-hundred square kilometres so far this year, making it the province’s second worst fire season on record — last year being the worst. The 1958 fire season ranks third on the list. Skrepnek says the fire trend of this season and last has prompted the B-C Wildfire Service to review how it recruits and uses resources, including both staff and firefighting equipment. He notes that a first-ever pool of 80 Type 2 contract firefighters have been employed this season, working directly for the B-C Wildfire Service.
