B-C Coroners Service says the number of fatal illicit drug overdoses tumbled 27 per cent between July and August, with 98 deaths reported last month, compared with 134 in July. The numbers are included in the latest coroners service examination of drug overdoses. The service says more than half of the 872 people whose deaths in 2016 and 2017 were investigated had been diagnosed with a mental disorder or showed evidence of being mentally ill. Eight-seven per cent of deaths occurred inside — with the majority in private residences but the coroner says not a single death was recorded at a supervised consumption or drug overdose prevention site.
