Ontario’s University of Waterloo say it will be celebrating Donna Strickland’s Nobel Prize in physics all year long. The associate professor and Guelph native played a key role in the discovery of chirped pulse amplification — a technique that underpins today’s lasers, including those used for eye surgery. The first woman to win the physics honour in 55 years, Strickland shares the prize with Gerard Mourou of France, and American Arthur Ashkin. U-W’s dean of science Bob Lemieux says faculty and administrators celebrated with champagne, noting Strickland’s Nobel win yesterday recognizes both her strength and that of the school’s physics and astronomy program
