The federal government wants to create new ocean sanctuaries off the west coast of Vancouver Island for southern resident killer whales. Fisheries and Oceans Minister Jonathan Wilkinson says these safe areas will prohibit a range of activities. The 61.5-million dollars also includes enhancements to increase chinook salmon — the favoured food for southern residents. The measures are part of a previously announced 167.4-million-dollar Whales Initiative aimed at improving prey availability and reducing disturbance of the whales
