The B-C government has introduced legislation that will allow ride-hailing companies to enter the provincial market next year. Transportation Minister Claire Trevena says the milestone legislation gets ride-hailing right for B-C by offering more options for people to get around — but with checks in place to make sure their ride is safe. The Passenger Transportation Amendment Act calls for I-C-B-C to develop insurance for ride-hailing for next fall, strengthens the Passenger Transportation Board’s authority to determine fares, vehicle supply and operating areas and toughens penalties for taxi and ride-hailing companies working outside the law. The province will also require all ride-hailing and taxi drivers to maintain a class four passenger licence and undergo mandatory criminal checks.
