Health officials in both Canada and the U-S are telling people to stop eating romaine lettuce because of a new E. coli outbreak linked to the vegetable. No deaths have been reported, but 18 people in Ontario and Quebec and 32 people in 11 American states have gotten sick and some have been hospitalized. Tracing the source of contaminated lettuce can be difficult because it’s often repackaged by middlemen. America’s F-D-A said it doesn’t have enough information to ask suppliers for a recall, but is urging supermarkets and restaurants to withdraw romaine until the contamination source can be identified and it’s telling consumers to throw out any romaine they have at home.
