Full mail service is set to resume on Tuesday, now that the Senate passed legislation ordering an end to postal workers’ rotating strikes. After five hours of additional debate, senators approved the back-to-work bill by a vote of 53-25 with four abstentions, and royal assent was quickly granted. The government deemed the bill’s passage to be urgent, due to the economic impact of continued mail disruptions during the busy holiday season. The bill does not impose postal contracts, but rather gives a mediator-arbitrator appointed by Ottawa 90 days to try to reach contract settlements. Five weeks of rotating strikes have led to massive backlogs of mail and parcel deliveries at Canada Post’s main sorting plants in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal.
