The provincial government is bringing in tougher chain-up regulations for commercial vehicle operators during the winter. Transportation Minister Claire Trevena says last year 33 of 35 extended closures on the Coquihalla Highway involved commercial vehicles and in most cases they were caused by drivers either poorly installing chains or not using them at all. She says the new rules and stricter fines that will follow will improve safety and hopefully reduce the number of highway closures. The new rules cover all commercial vehicles over five-thousand kilograms, and will require specific chains on a set number of tires depending on the size of the vehicle.
