First Nations leaders from B-C’s north and central coast are in Ottawa urging the Senate to pass a bill preventing super-sized oil tankers in their region. There’s already a moratorium on tankers carrying more than 12-thousand 500 tonnes of oil in the water between northern Vancouver Island and the Alaska border, but a law is now being debated in the Senate. Heiltsuk Chief Marilyn Slett is leading the delegation to lobby senators to pass the legislation. Alberta’s government strongly opposes the bill, saying it cuts off an entire option of shipping crude oil from north.
