Federal Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould has said she has “every expectation” Canada’s new impaired-driving law will be challenged in the courts, but was also certain it will pass the test. New rules take effect across Canada on Tuesday that increase penalties for impaired drivers and expand police powers to demand breath samples. The legislation gives officers the right to ask for a breath sample from any driver they lawfully stop for any reason. It is meant to curb injuries and death by helping police catch drivers behind the wheel with a blood-alcohol level topping the legal limit.
