The head of the Assembly of First Nations says the use of force against Indigenous pipeline protesters in northern B-C is a violation of their human and aboriginal rights. Fourteen members of a clan of the Wet’suwet’en First Nation were taken into custody yesterday after the R-C-M-P said it became clear they would not comply with a court order to remove a blockade stopping preliminary work on a natural gas pipeline from Dawson Creek to Kitimat. But Perry Bellgarde says the only way to resolve the situation is for parties with differing views to hold meaningful and productive dialogue. Protests are taking place across the country — including in Victoria and Vancouver — in support of the clan members who are opposed to the pipeline.
