The Powell River Salmon Society says vandals broke into its Duck Lake hatchery over the winter holidays and turned off water to part of the system, killing 700-thousand newly hatched chum salmon. Hatchery manager Shane Dobler (DAWB’-ler) says it means much lower chum returns around the Sunshine Coast in four-year’s time. But Dobler is confident the society’s dedicated volunteers can rebuild the stocks after 2023. He calls the vandalism “hugely disappointing” but says the society can turn its attention to a “heightened level of awareness and more security.
