The province’s police watchdog is investigating a head-on crash in Nanaimo that claimed the lives of both drivers. The Independent Investigations Office has been called in because an R-C-M-P officer attempted to stop one of the drivers before the collision occurred in the northbound lanes of Highway 1 early Monday morning. It says its investigation is being conducted to determine if the officer’s actions before the crash are linked to the drivers’ deaths. The I-I-O says the officer tried to pull over a G-M-C truck after it left a home in Nanaimo but last saw it heading down the southbound lanes of the highway after the driver refused to stop.
