New Democrats have won a crucial provincial byelection in British Columbia that allows Premier John Horgan’s minority government to maintain its grip on power. Wednesday’s win means the N-D-P has 41 seats, but holds power in the 87-seat legislature with the agreed support of three Green party M-L-A’s. The Liberals have 42 seats and there is one Independent, who serves as legislature Speaker. New Democrat Sheila Malcolmson, who resigned her House of Commons’ seat to run provincially, won by nearly 19-hundred votes over Liberal Tony Harris, taking about 49 per cent of the vote to Harris’s 40 per cent.
