B-C’s labour code is getting its first overhaul in almost two decades. Labour Minister Harry Bains says proposed changes to the Labour Relations Code will ensure stronger protection of collective bargaining rights as well as more stable and harmonious labour relations for employers and unions. Bains says secret ballot votes for union certification will remain but changes will allow the Labour Relations Board more latitude to impose certification if an employer is found to have interfered in a vote. Other changes include union successorship protection to contracts in several occupations — including janitorial, food and non-clinical health services — if the employer ends the contract and then retenders it to new bidders.
