Green Leader Elizabeth May calls Monday night’s byelection victory by a fellow Green party member on Vancouver Island the dawn of a new era in federal politics. Green candidate Paul Manly handily captured the riding of Nanaimo-Ladysmith over six other rivals, including from the three mainstream parties. The Nanaimo area has traditionally swung back and forth between New Democrat or Conservative-leaning M-P’s. But Manly says his victory last night shows the other parties that Canadians are serious about climate change and he expects the Green wave of support to grow in the October election. He also said it’s time for governments to stop subsidizing the “old” economy and the internal combustion engine.
