BC Cancer says more than 1,300 British Columbians will be diagnosed with melanoma this year, an aggressive form of skin cancer.
The number of people diagnosed with melanoma in the province is expected to rise by 26% over the next 5 years.
While we know sunscreen and seeking shade is an important part of sun safety, Dr. Parveen Bhatti, BC Cancer’s scientific director of cancer prevention is also encouraging residents to add another option to their sun safety regimen.
There’s no time like summer to enjoy the outdoors in beautiful B.C. In fact, part of what keeps our overall cancer rates low is the active lifestyle many British Columbian’s enjoy, but when the sun comes out, so too does harmful UV rays which cause skin damage and may lead to skin cancer.
