The Conservation Officer Service (COS) received a complaint Thursday evening regarding a black bear that attacked two dogs near the North end on Willingdon Beach Trail at Second Beach in Powell River.
One dog was killed and a second badly injured and required veterinary care.
In response, the COS requested that the City of Powell River close the Willingdon Beach and adjacent trails. The trails will remain closed for the weekend or until the bear is located.
The public is encouraged to avoid the area.
The COS has responded with two officers conducting patrols by foot and vehicle. A live trap has been deployed, but there have been no further sightings of the bear. The public is reminded to walk dogs on leash and to carry bear spray when out walking.
Sightings can be reported to the COS 24-hr reporting line at 1-877-952-7277.
