The mayors of Victoria, Tofino, Squamish and Rossland are applauding the B-C government for launching consultations on ways to reduce plastic pollution. Environment Minister George Heyman says the message from residents across the province is clear that action is needed to reduce plastic waste, especially single-use items like water bottles and plastic bags. The province is using an online survey to ask for input on possible action including bans on single-use packaging and expanding the deposit-refund system to cover all beverage containers. Victoria council was set to impose a ban on single-use plastic bags earlier this month but it was quashed by the B-C Court of Appeal, which said it would require approval from the Environment Ministry.
