Justin Trudeau says he is “deeply sorry,” after a yearbook photo has crept up to haunt the Liberal leader as he runs for re-election as prime minister. Time magazine late Wednesday published the black-and-white photo of a costumed Trudeau taken at the Vancouver private school where he worked as a teacher before entering politics. It shows Trudeau dressed as Aladdin, donning a turban and “brownface” makeup, at a 2001 “Arabian Nights”-themed costume party. Speaking with reporters on his campaign plane before leaving Halifax for Winnipeg last night, Trudeau apologized for the big misstep years ago. He said “it was a dumb thing to do,” adding he didn’t know it was racist at the time, but now recognizes it was. Trudeau said he is mad at himself for doing it and asked Canadians to forgive him.
