The speaker of the B-C legislature is being asked to update the dress code to formally recognize that members have the right to wear religious head coverings. The N-D-P deputy government caucus chair says she has sent a letter to Speaker Darryl Plecas making the request. Rachna Singh says she’s concerned that current rules state that every member wanting to speak in the legislature must rise “uncovered” to address the speaker. The Surrey M-L-A says issues of personal identity should not be left open to interpretation and changing the rule will ensure the Legislature remains a welcoming place for all British Columbians.
