Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau spent much of his time in Monday night’s leaders debate in Gatineau, Quebec on the defensive, facing attacks on his record from all sides about spending, indigenous issues and who has the better climate-change policy. Trudeau reminded voters his government in four years has lifted 900-thousand Canadians out of poverty, created almost a million jobs, and has cut taxes for the middle class. And he argued that the Liberals have done more to tackle climate change than any Canadian government in history. But Green Leader Elizabeth May says his plan and targets aren’t nearly enough. And Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer called Trudeau a “fraud” whose carbon tax won’t work to stop big polluters. May attacked Scheer’s promise to cut foreign-aid funding as a “short-term, misguided, greedy and selfish” policy that will do nothing to end poverty.
